I take on a limited number of commissions each year. If you’ve got a particular idea you’d like to explore please get in touch and if you’d like more information about the whole process of commissioning a painting or drawing please follow the link above.
Over the years I’ve painted a wide range of subjects including weddings, gardens, buildings, coastal scenes and portraits for both private and corporate clients and each has been a unique creation.
As with the rest of my work, I prefer when I can to work from direct observation but I can also work from good quality photographs as well or a combination of both.
The images in this section are all examples of work painted to commission and I’ve included a little bit of their back story’s.
Commissioned by my client to celebrate his wife’s special birthday and dipicting his wife and her dog on one of their favorate walks. I painted this one mainly on site over a couple of painting sessions and added the figure and dog from photos supplied by my client.
House in Barbados
Oil on board 40cm x 70cm 2020
Painted from photo references supplied by the client
Double Portrait
Oil on board 4 @ 20cm x 20cm 2020
This was an unusual commission for me, a friend of mine asked if I would paint four paintings of his parents from the same reference image, one for himself and the other three to he wanted to give as gifts to his three sisters. The reference photo was a selfie on his phone that he’d shown his dad how to take while they were all in their car together.
A Garden in Chalkwell
Oil on canvas 45cm x 120cm 2019
It was a real pleasure to paint in such a lovely garden! Pretty much all of this was painted from direct observation and I lost count of how many visits I made. My client wanted a view that took in the whole of her back garden and so I’ve included a very wide view. As the painting took several months to complete I was able to include different flowers as they came into bloom.
Estuary View
Oil on canvas 45cm x 150cm 2019
For this painting my client had a particular place she wanted to hand the painting which dictated its shape and size. We then had a think about what would be a good subject for her painting and we chose this area as it had a personal connection for her. This has been the largest painting I’ve painted on site up till now and I really had visions of taking of in the wind and sailing over the estuary. Fortunately the weather was great and it was a real pleasure to paint.
Shoebury Beach Huts
Oil on Canvas 70cm x 70cm 2018
I painted this one towards the end of 2018 and the client commissioned it as a present for his wife. It took me quite a few visits to complete as I’d not realised when I took the commission on quite how high the tide came at this part of Shoebury which ment that a couple of the times I went to paint I just couldn’t get on the beach.
Thorpe Bay Beach Hut
Oil on Canvas 50cm x 40cm 2018
I’d painted this little beach hut a few previously and my client spotted it one of my greetings cards. They asked me if I could paint another version but this time including their in law’s who happened to own the beach hut. Thorpe Bay Beach Hut – Oil on Canvas 50cm x 40cm 2018
Avenue of Trees
Oil on Canvas 270cm x 270cm 2009
My largest painting to date! Commissioned in 2009 a long with two companion paintings showing below by South Essex NHS University Partnership Trust to go in the reception area of their newly built Brentwood Resource Centre
Southweald park
Oil on canvas 60cm x 90cm 2009
Thorndon Park
Oil on canvas 60cm x 90cm 2009
Millie
Pastel on paper 40cm x 30cm 2007
This was the very first ever commission I took of one of our friends little girl. I wanted her to look happy and natural rather than self consciously looking into a camera and to achieve this we got all our children to sit together and watch their favourite program on tv while I snapped away with my camera in the background. I then worked up the drawing in my studio.
